Greathouse Butterfly Farm Programs

  Come & Learn about Nature’s Beauty where activities are designed to integrate science, language arts, math & social studies

GRADE LEVEL:

Kindergarten through 5th grade

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Students will explore a butterfly farm and demonstration gardens where they will learn more about the life cycle of a butterfly, understand that all living things have basic needs such as air, food, and water. They will also gain a better understanding of how important camouflage and adaptive methods are for survival.

LEARNING GOALS:

Activities are designed to integrate science, language arts, math and social studies.

TEACHING METHODS:

Directed learning/demonstration activities (using the students), experiential, and hands-on lessons will be used. Teachers will receive a pre-trip activity/lesson plan that reviews basic information about butterflies, insects, gardens, and Greathouse Butterfly Farm. Each teacher will leave Greathouse Butterfly Farm with an Individual Butterfly Science Kit for each student with a follow up lesson plan to reinforce the lessons covered on the field trip.

Individual Butterfly Science Kit

 

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the Greathouse Butterfly Farm program, kindergarten through 2nd grade students should:

1. Use listening strategies effectively (LA.C.1.1).
2. Understand the patterns of function in living things (SC.F.1.1, SC.F.1.2, SC.F.1.3,SC.F.1.4).
3. Understand the competitive, interdependent, cyclic nature of living things in the environment     (SC.G.1.1, SC.G.1.2, SC.G.1.3, SC.G.1.4).
4. Understand the consequences of using limited natural resources (SC.G.2.1, SC.G.2.2).
5. Understand the scientific processes and habits of mind to solve problems (SC.H.1.1,SC.H.1.5).

In addition, 3rd through 5th grade students should:

1. Know that all living animals depend on plants. (SC.F.1.2.3).
2. Know that all living things compete in a climatic region with other living things and structural
    adaptations make them fit for an environment. (SC.G.1.2.2).
3. Know that all living things must compete for earth’s limited resources; organisms best adapted to
    compete for available resources will be successful and pass their adaptations (traits) to their
    offspring. (SC.G.2.2.1).
4. Know that the size of the population is dependent upon the available resources within the
    community. (SC.G.2.2.2).

SPECIFICATIONS:

Program Length: 1.5 to 2 hours;

Fees:    $ 5.00/student - minimum of ten students or $ 50.00 ( 1 chaperone per 10 students no                 charge );
                Siblings $ 3.00 w/o Individual Butterfly Science Kit
                Siblings $ 5.00 with an Individual Butterfly Science Kit

Confirmation:  email address needed for confirmation and communication.

      Deposit: $50 must be paid before pre-trip materials (with lesson plans) can be shipped. Payment in full must be made by the trip leader immediately upon arrival at Greathouse Butterfly Farm.

What to Bring/How to Dress Students

WE WILL BE OUTSIDE!   Please remember to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and insect repellent in warm weather. A hat is also a good idea. Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, NOT open-toed shoes or sandals. For colder weather wear warm layers of clothing.

At the conclusion of our visit, each teacher will also receive an Individual Butterfly Science Kit and a follow up lesson plan to reinforce the lessons covered during our program. Additional Adopt-A-Butterfly Science Kits are available for $5.00 each.

Program Length:  
1 hour for a group of up to 60 students.

Fees:   The fee rate is based upon the distance to your site from Greathouse Butterfly Farm.
            For a program that is:
            a.)  within 30 miles of the Butterfly Farm and one Individual Butterfly Science Kit the fee is
                   $80.00 for the first hour.
            b.)  between 30 and 45 miles from the Butterfly Farm and one Individual Butterfly Science
                   Kit
the fee is $100.00.
            c.)  over 45 miles from the Butterfly Farm and one Individual Butterfly Science Kit, the fee
                   is $120.00. 

Additional Adopt-A-Butterfly Science Kits: $5.00 each

Basic Butterfly Science Kit 

 

Florida Butterfly Caterpillars for Florida Classrooms. 

Raise a butterfly for each of your students! The Kit includes 35 caterpillars with food, 35 containers and lids, a washable and reusable two-foot tall rectangular Butterfly Vivarium, additional special food and complete instructions.

Individual Butterfly Science Kits

Prices:           Quantities of 1- 10 Individual Butterfly Science Kit - $6.00 each;

Quantities of 11 to 30 - $5.50 each;                         

Quantities of more than 30 - $5.00 each

Our system is very simple for the teacher while giving each student the hands-on experience of watching their larvae change through metamorphosis. Each caterpillar is in a small container with special diet attached to a larger container.  When the caterpillar pupates simply remove the lid and throw away the old diet. Replace the larger lid and watch the chrysalis until the butterfly emerges. .

You never have to touch or move the caterpillars.

Butterfly Vivariums are designed to keep your newly emerged butterflies happy and healthy until you can release them outside. These containers open easily and store in a small space. Fill them with potted flowering plants or cut flowers to feed your butterflies while you and your students observe the butterflies.
